As I say, the spirit of the devil entered me, and I noticed on the set that there was a block of cement with a steel ring implanted it in, and then attached to the ring there was a rope. And I called a member of the crew to move the cement block under the bed, and I took the rope and I sneaked it up under the covers and I tied it around my waist. And so, I was all set for the scene, with the comforter and the the baby. And Cukor called action, and up the stairs, and into the room rushes Clark Gable, and he comes over to the bed and he puts his hands, arms, under the comforter and he lifts Melanie and the baby, and he lifts them, and he lifts them … And he says, “what the devil?”
